Welcome....this is my very first article!!
I intend to post weekly on here about a wide array of topics. Hopefully I will provide some interesting insights.
So please revisit to keep seeing my latest post!!
You may just have an interest in the subjects I write about or you may be having some difficulties of your own.
"Understanding Anxiety" In this article I intended to give you a brief overview of anxiety, I hope you find it useful.
Are we predisposed to suffer from it? What other symptoms can be a symptom of anxiety? How do I manage it?
Did you know that anxiety is normal. It is when it disrupts your life that it becomes a problem.
Some interesting facts:
When we are afraid, concerned, or stressed, the part of our brain responsible for the "fight or flight" response will generate the nervous, fearful, worry and dread sensations we call anxiety.
Anxiety can be genetic:There is no “anxiety gene,”but our genes may interact to predispose someone to anxiety. Studies indicate that there is likely a genetic component to anxiety, though more information is needed to understand which genes cause anxiety and how this interacts with environmental factors such as stress and trauma to cause someone to develop an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety and Depression are linked: Nearly half of those with major depression also suffer from severe and persistent anxiety. People who are depressed often feel anxious and worried. Anxiety and trigger depression and vice versa.
Anxiety often begins in childhood.
Anxiety can cause physical symptoms.Tiredness, increased heart rate, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, muscle aches/weakness, headaches, digestion issues, discomfort and tingling sensations, cold hands and feet, anger and memory issues.
How do I manage it?
Try to set a specific time (start and end time) to focus on your worries so you can reassure yourself you haven't forgotten to think about them.
Write down your worries, in a notebook, diary, or write your worry on pieces of paper and pop them in a jar.
Talk to someone you can trust to get support, this might be a friend, colleague or family member.
Look after yourself generally (diet, exercise etc)
Above all, remember that you are not defined by your anxiety. Try to take each day at a time and if possible try some suggestions above. But if your anxiety runs deeper you may decide to seek professional help from a counsellor.
