Guide to choosing a Therapist

Louise Halford. How to choose a therapist

Welcome to my "choosing a therapist" page.

It's daunting choosing a therapist.

How do you choose? There are so many out there. You may not know where to start or what to find out before booking a session.

I have put together this guide to help you. I hope it helps you to seek out the right therapist for you.

  • Do they offer an initial free phone call so you can find out more before you commit to sessions?

  • Is the therapist registered with a professional counselling/psychotherapy body?

  • Does the therapist work with the issues that you bring to therapy?

  • How long is the therapy session? (Some therapists offer 50 minutes some 1 hour.)

  • Does the therapist offer the type of session you want? in person sessions, online (zoom, skype, google meet etc) telephone.

Do you feel at ease with the therapist?

  • Do you think you could build a trusting relationship with them?

  • Would you feel comfortable telling them about intimate details of your life?

  • Do you feel safe with them?

  • Do you like their manner towards you?

  • Did they listen to you?

  • Are they easy to talk to?

  • Someone genuine. They should have the ability to start and finish the session appropriately. Genuinely care about your wellbeing. They should be transparent about fees, session times or the duration of therapy. Transparent about confidentiality and how they protect your data.
